Hungary is a small country in the middle of Europe with hardly 10 million people. Hungary at the same time is a great country with unmatched cultural, scientific and historic heritage, coupled with untarnished natural beauty and welcoming, hardworking people. It is an ideal hub for business, a popular and safe tourist destination.
Did you know... that the developers of nuclear engineering; the holograph; the Moon and Mars rovers; the Model T Ford; ballpoint pen; telephone switchboard; BASIC computer programming; isolation of vitamin C; Rubik cube; dynamo; safety matches; soda water; colour television; the carburettor and the automatic gearbox; the Zeppelin…. are all of Hungarian origin? And so is – among others - Joseph Pulitzer, of "Pulitzer Prize"; the ex-New York governor George Pataki; the legendary film producer Sir Alexander Korda; film director George Cukor; fashion designer Calvin Klein, actor Tony Curtis. The one of the greatest football player in history Ferenc Puskás was also Hungarian.
India and Hungary has had a long history of cooperation, beginning in earnest at the end of the eighteen hundreds, but growing stronger today in the 21st century. The most important task of our Embassy is to strengthen the ties between our countries. The whole staff of the Embassy are working to help you if you have inquires on business, tourism, culture, education and also visa affairs related to Hungary.
Please note that our embassy in New Delhi represents Hungary also in Bangladesh, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Official visit of the Vice-Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament to India
H. E. Mr. István Jakab, Vice-Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, paid an official visit to India. During his stay in India, he held talks with H. E. Harivansh Narayan Singh, Deputy Speaker of the Indian Upper House, Jane Karkada, Director General of the Center for Excellence in Food and Agriculture, Confederation of Indian Industry, Himanshu Pathak, Secretary of the Indian Directorate of Agricultural Research and Education, and A.K. Singh, Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. Other members of the delegation included H. E. Mr. Péter Sárdi State Secretary, director of the Foreign Affairs Directorate of the Office of the Parliament, and Prof. Csaba Gyuricza, rector of the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
Visit of István Széchenyi University’s delegation to New Delhi
During the visit, the university representatives met the President and Director of the Drone Federation of India, the Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, the top management of Marwadi University and Integral University of Lucknow. Professor László Palkovics participated in a panel discussion on the topic of Gearing Up for Carbon Neutrality & Sustainability organized by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India ACMA at the Atmanirbhar Excellence Awards & Technology Summit 2023. The delegation also held discussions with potential business partners.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Mr. István Szabó presented his credentials to Her Excellency Draupadi Murmu, President of India, on 24 March 2023.
In the audience discussion following the ceremony, both parties emphasized the importance of Hungarian-Indian relations, referring to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
The Ambassador conveyed the greetings of the Hungarian President Katalin Novák.
The President expressed her gratitude for Hungary's support and the help provided to the Indian students in repatriation from Ukraine. In his reply, the Ambassador highlighted the achievements of educational cooperation so far, as more than 500 young Indians are currently studying in Hungary.
Further strengthening of cooperation in the field of defence was also discussed, which the Ambassador confirmed on the Hungarian side, highlighting the review and utilization of opportunities for military industrial cooperation.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Mr. István Szabó presented his credentials to His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, President of the Republic of Maldives on 22 May 2023.
At the ceremony, President Solih welcomed Ambassador István Szabó and congratulated him on the commencement of his term. He noted that this week will mark the 48th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between the Maldives and Hungary. He added that both countries had made progress in fostering closer ties, particularly over the past two years through high-level visits.
The President and the Ambassador also discussed other topics of shared interest, such as higher education, sports, tourism, and economic cooperation. President Solih and Ambassador Szabó concluded the discussions by expressing their commitment to strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Hungary.
Hungarian Defence Forces Day in New Delhi
The Embassy of Hungary and the Defence Attaché Office celebrated the Hungarian Defence Forces Day on Friday, 19th of May 2023 at the Ambassador’s residence. Foreign Defence Attaches and representatives of the Indian Armed Forces attended the reception. Lt. Col. Laszlo Kovari opened the event followed by a speech of H.E. István Szabó, Ambassador of Hungary who greeted the chief guest of the evening, Rear Admiral Jyotin Raina, NM, VSM. An exhibition of photographs about the everyday life and work of the Hungarian Defence Forces were on display for the guests along with paintings from the Hungarian military history. A unique fusion Dance recital captivated the audience when a young girl from NGO Global Family performed Bharatnatyam under a Hungarian military song. JNU students of Hungarian language presented the Hungarian National Song along with it’s translation in English and Hindi. The evening concluded with an outstanding Hungarian dinner.
The Hungarian Embassy in New Delhi is celebrating with yoga
In the framework of the 9th International Yoga Mahotsav, The Liszt Institute Delhi in collaboration with the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi organised a Yoga session to celebrate the 75 years of diplomatic relations between Hungary and India. Hon'ble Minister of State for External Affairs & Culture Meenakshi Lekhi graced the event with her presence. The yoga session was conducted by Ms. Seema Sondhi from the Yoga Studio.
This year’s Nobel Prize, in the category of Physiology or Medicine, was awarded to Katalin Karikó.
On the 2nd of October 2023, the Royal Swedish Science Academy has announced that, based on the decision of the Karolinska Institute’s Nobel General Assembly, this year’s shared Nobel Prize was awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications. These discoveries were proven to be key achivements to the development of the mRNA vaccine, widely used against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Katalin Karikó obtained her doctoral degree in biochemistry at the University of Szeged, Hungary, where she conducted her first post-doctoral researches, later continuing them in the United States, at the Temple University and at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Since 2013, she’s been the vice president, and later the leading vice president of BioNTech RNA Pharmaceuticals. Currently she’s a professor at the University of Szeged, and an assistant professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
After the success of biochemist Katalin Karikó, the Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to another Hungarian, Ferenc Krausz
Based on the decision of the Royal Swedish Science Academy on the 3rd of October 2023, this year’s Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to Ferenc Krausz, Pierre Agostini and Anne L’Huiller, shared equally, for their research into methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter. Their achievements make possible the better understanding of molecular structural changes, which in turn may lead to the development of new medical imaging processes and advancements in the field of pharmaceutical development.
Ferenc Krausz studied electrical engineering at the Budapest University of Technology and physics at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest in parallel. In 1991, he received his doctorate in quantum electronics from the Vienna University of Technology, where he is a professor from 1999. Since 2003, he is the director at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, and since 2004, he is the head of department of experimental physics at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary István Szabó handed over his credentials in Sri Lanka and Nepal.
At the audience discussion following the ceremony in Sri Lanka, both parties expressed their intention to further strengthen our existing relations. The President raised the issue of broadening the areas of cooperation, citing the possibility of defence cooperation as an example. In response to the question, the Ambassador explained Hungary's position regarding the war raging in the neighbourhood, emphasizing our unconditional commitment to peace, to prevent further war destruction and the possible escalation of the armed conflict. At the end of the conversation, The. President asked to convey his personal greetings to President Katalin Novák and to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
During the personal conversation with the President of Nepal, both sides expressed their intention to further strengthen our existing relations. The president drew attention to the strengthening of tourism relations. The Ambassador delivered the greetings of President Katalin Novák. He went on to say that the government of Hungary has offered 10 Stipendium Hungaricum scholarships to the government of Nepal, this agreement is under negotiation. This can open up further possibilities in the field of educational interactions and speed up cooperation between higher education institutions. The Ambassador also talked about the planned visit of Minister Péter Szijjártó to Nepal, which can be considered historic and aims to expand cooperation between the two countries. The President thanked for the information and emphasized that he intends to do everything he can to further strengthening of our collaborations, and expressed his pleasure about the expected ministerial visit.
Commemorating the heroes of the 1956 revolution, our embassy organized the national day reception on 18 October 2023 with great success
Our embassy successfully organized its national day reception on 18 October 2023 in the ballroom of the Shangri-La New Delhi hotel. It was the first time such an event took place after the Covid epidemic. The event was attended by nearly 300 people, representatives of India's political, economic, cultural, scientific, educational, military and diplomatic life, including many ambassadors accredited to New Delhi honoured the event, and also representatives from other Indian states and cities travelled for the celebration. Among others, Indira Gandhi's granddaughter took part in the Hungarian celebration, whose guest of honour was Mr. Abhay Thakur, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (G20 Sous Sherpa).
Ambassador István Szabó recalled the great moments of the revolution, its heroes, and its historical significance. He praised the efforts of India's diplomatic mission in Budapest at the time to prevent the execution of Árpád Göncz. State Secretary Mr. Thakur pointed out the importance of the declaration adopted by consensus at the G20 summit in New Delhi, in which he helped in drafting, he also commemorated the 75th anniversary of Hungarian-Indian diplomatic relations, emphasizing the dynamic development of our multilateral relations system.
At the event, the local Capital City Minstrels choir sang the anthems, and the event was also enriched by the 1956 exhibition specially prepared for this occasion by the Liszt Cultural Institute.
Visit of H.E. István Szabó Ambassador of Hungary to Amity International School
On 27 October 2023, H.E István Szabó Ambassador of Hungary, accompanied by Dr. Hilda Farkas counsellor for science and technology, visited the Pushp Vihar high school of Amity International Schools, as part of the "Talk with Diplomats" program. The Ambassador honoured the results of the school's Atal Tinkering Lab innovation student workshop and listened to the students' presentation of their innovative developments.
The Ambassador then attended and gave a presentation at a seminar designed to allow students to meet diplomats. In her greeting, Director Ms. Jyoti Arora highlighted the cordial relations that Amity has had with Hungary for many years, and mentioned the numerous exchange programs organized by Amity for Hungarian schools and vice versa.
In his speech, the Ambassador emphasized the results of diplomatic relations between the two countries and pointed out that learning and science are two successful areas where our countries have excellent cooperation. In her speech, Dr. Hilda Farkas praised the excellent results presented in the school's Atal Tinkering Lab and drew the students' attention to the newly announced Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship application as an excellent opportunity for further education. After the speeches, the students could ask the Ambassador questions about diplomatic life.
Visit of H.E. István Szabó Ambassador of Hungary to Marwadi University in Rajkot
H.E István Szabó Ambassador of Hungary, as the chief guest, attended the National Model United Nations Competition event organized by Marwadi University and gave a welcome speech, than met with the leaders of the institution in Rajkot.
This is the first event of its kind in the history of Marwadi University, intending to create a tradition. Its purpose is to give university students the opportunity to develop their diplomatic and negotiation skills, to get to know and modelling the United Nations, and to get an overview of the challenges of international diplomacy, to acquire the necessary skills on how to participate in it, and last but not least, to get to know the world's great challenges and the ways to solve them.
In his speech, the Ambassador drew attention to the importance of international dialogue. He said that the key to a successful diplomatic career is primarily an understanding of worldwide problems, knowledge of languages, good negotiation skills, critical thinking, and getting to know and understand other cultures. The ambassador emphasized the results of the diplomatic relations between the India and Hungary, and pointed out that education and science are two successful areas where our countries have excellent cooperation. He also praised Marwadi University's excellent relations with Hungary.
After the opening ceremony, the Ambassador met with the top management of the university. At the meeting, the parties expressed their great pleasure about the extensive relations Marwadi University has managed to build with Hungarian universities in the past 6 years. It was concluded that Marwadi University is currently the institution with the widest relations with Hungary in India.
